"Home" is not a Bebop album by any stretch of the imagination, but rather a display of another aspect of Aldcroft’s craft. Here he performs solo versions of ten of his own compositions that not only hold the listener’s interest in their own right but also demonstrate his virtuosity on the guitar. Since none of them is a conventional "song," it's not always clear which parts are composed and which improvised. But they are all expressively melodic and represent a variety of moods and styles, including the gently folkish "Home," the fiercely swinging single-line "House of The," the earthy "Jug’s Corner," and the metrically complex "Hands." The percussive sounds the guitarist gets on "Field" by tapping the strings on the fingerboard produce an especially electrifying effect. |
