Pianist George McFetridge and guitarist Ken Aldcroft rank among the finest jazz talents on Canada's West Coast with years of experience behind them. So when that showed up together as a duo called Ear Contact on a new disc, January Sun, it prompted certain expectations.

The album has a magic all it's own. As Ear Contact suggests, this collaboration is really about listening to each other, and while the disc features 11 tunes (all credited to McFetridge) you can hear the element of spontaneous give and take throughout. It has the feel of a jam with a mix of open-ended, atmospheric and upbeat conversation that would fit well on the ECM label.
